Is it healthy to write a diary?

Keeping a diary has many benefits. These include improving your mental health, as a result of giving you a place to vent your feelings and the ability to process difficult experiences. When life sends you some kind of challenge, you can analyze those options in your diary, noting the moral implications, as well as the emotional pains of decisions that are difficult to make. As an extreme example, here is a link to a famous entry in the diary of Patrick Breen, a member of the unfortunate group of pioneers of the Donner party who was trapped in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the winter of 1846-1847, some of whom resorted to cannibalism.

Keeping a diary has the ability to reduce our anxieties and calm our nerves in potentially stressful situations. Keeping a diary of your thoughts and emotions around situations with which you feel uncomfortable, allows you to develop a sense of control and, therefore, reduce your anxiety. It has long been known that writing about stressful events causes improvements in health and psychological well-being. Now, a new study provides clues as to why this is the case.

If you are more traditionalist, you can write a diary the old-fashioned way, with paper or notebook and a writing utensil. If you initially need to write a single line or detail the details of what you ate for breakfast, do so. Whether you call it a diary or refer to it as a diary, having a place where you write down your personal thoughts, feelings, memories and impressions about life can be healing and teach you to know yourself better. Half, assigned to an expressive writing condition, were instructed to write about their deepest thoughts and feelings about coming to college and to tie it all together at the end of their essays.

While it seems like a trivial task, journaling has been shown to reduce depressive thoughts and behaviors by providing the writer with greater control. However, it is recommended to write regularly, at least once to three times a week, to make the most of the journaling experience.
